Acacia Festival:@Street Hockey & Flea Market
| On participating in the Acacia Festival 'Street Hockey'........ | |
| This is my second year as a KIS member, and
I have participated in the Street Hockey
tournament both years. This year I
arrrived
ready to play and planned to make use
of
my experience from the last tournament. Last year I played on the 'Keyaki' team, and we narrowly lost to the KIS powerhouse in the final game, and missed out on the big prize. This year I played on the KIS team, hoping to be part of a winning team, but we were soundly defeated by the team of foreigners in the first game, and went on to struggle to a third place finish. Comparatively speaking, street hockey is a sport with which Japanese people are probably not very familiar. However, the rules are not very complex, and anyone can easily join in (of course women too). If I have another chance I would like to play again. However, I am horribly out of shape and after only a few minutes of playing, my leg and back muscles started to get sore, so next year I think I'll try and do some conditioning in time for the Acacia festival.... I want to be able to drink the sweet beer of victory! (written by Ms. Takeuchi)

| Street Hockey and Flea Market in the Acacia Festival | |
| On June 9th we were blessed with beautiful
weather for the annual KIS Street Hockey
Tournament. There were only four teams,
but
the players all gave it their best,
and we
had an exciting day of hockey. The
KIS team
pulled of a miraculous third place,
fighting
a lack of skill and general 'age' (sorry,
I just had to say it) among the players.
Filling out the scoreboard, the foreigner
team came in first, and the Kazuno
soccer
team in second. For the June 10th Flea Market, we had an unfortunate downpour of rain so we had to hurriedly change locations to the canopy of the elementary school. In all, we had six 'stores' at the flea market. In addition to stores selling used items, there were people selling herbs, hand-made crafts, etc. It was a really lively environment and sales were brisk. All sales from the KIS store will be donated to international aid charity. Thank you to everyone who came out. Also, while we were holding the flea market, our KIS chairperson volunteered to pull the rickshaw for charity-- many thanks to everyone who took a ride. (written by Ms. Ichijo) |

| Rickshaw Rides@(KIS 2001 Acacia Festival Event) | |
| During the morning of Sunday June 10th, we
held the Rickshaw Rides for charity.
Departing
in front of the Kosaka Mine Office,
traveeling
down Meiji century avenue until Jukai
line
and then back again, the ride lasted
about
a 10 minutes. With the Acacia flowers
in
bloom, and historical Meiji era buildings
(Kosaka Mine Office, the Korakukan
theatre)
in the background, custmers got a real
treat
in seeing the scenery from the Rickshaw.
I was happy that I could show them
some of
the charms of Kosaka, especially visitors
from out of town. Of course, all proceeds
will go to International Society charity
events. Thanks to everyone who helped
make
this event possible. (Written by Ms.
Hosokawa) |
